Όσοι έχετε περπατήσει την Πόλη του Φωτός και δεν έχετε περιοριστεί στα «γλυκερά» α λα Μπρασάι τουριστικά αξιοθέατα, ενδεχομένως να έχετε πέσει πάνω σε ένα από τα πιο γραφικά βιβλιοπωλεία που κοσμούν την «διανοούμενη» αριστερή όχθη του Παρισιού, στο νούμερο 37 της οδού Μπυσερί, στο 5ο Διαμέρισμα, δυο βήματα από την πλατεία Σεν-Μισέλ και τη Νοτρ Νταμ.

Το ιστορικό βιβλιοπωλείο με την ονομασία Shakespeare and Company, δημιούργημα του Τζορτζ Γουίτμαν το 1951 και σημείο συνάντησης διάσημων λογοτεχνών όπως οι «beat» Ουίλιαμ Μπάροουζ και Άλεν Γκίνσμπεργκ, αποτελεί φόρο τιμής σε ένα άλλο ακόμη πιο ιστορικό βιβλιοπωλείο με την ίδια ονομασία που είχε ανοίξει το 1919 η φοβερή και τρομερή Σίλβια Μπλιτς, μία Αμερικανίδα που είχε μετοικήσει στο Παρίσι.

Μέχρι το 1940 όπου έκλεισε αποτελούσε εξίσου τόπο συνάντησης μεγάλων μορφών όπως ο Τζέιμις Τζόις και ο Έρνεστ Χέμινγουεϊ.

Το βιβλιοπωλείο όμως έμεινε στην ιστορία για την απόφαση της Μπλιτς να εκδόσει τον Οδυσσέα του Τζόις το 1922, όπως επίσης και για την έμπνευσή της να τον πείσει να δεχτεί να ηχογραφηθεί η φωνή του ενόσω αυτός απαγγέλλει αποσπάσματα από τα δύο του αριστουργήματα, τον Οδυσσέα και το Finnegans Wake (1929).

Ακούστε λοιπόν μερικά θραύσματα από δύο τερατώδη αριστουργήματα της μοντέρνας λογοτεχνίας δια στόματος του δημιουργού τους.
