A fire broke out near the Kareas and Koropi regions on Hymettus Mountain on Friday afternoon.
The fire spread on the north side of the mountain in the area between Katechaki Avenue and the cemetery of Vyronas before firefighters were able to respond.
The fire has been generating a lot of smoke, which is being carried throughout the region.
Even though it remained a few hundred meters’ distance from residential areas the blaze is now approaching houses.
Initially only a few square meters in size, the blaze grew significantly due to the steep terrain, hot and dry conditions and strong winds which continue to fuel the fire.
Around 40 firefighters, multiple emergency vehicles and fire fighting airplanes were dispatched to the contain the fire.
Another fire in Koropi contained with no risk of reignition that same afternoon.
