Syriza's right-wing partner criticizes deal

Panos Kammenos, leader of the right-wing Independent Greeks and coalition partner of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, told reporters on Monday that his party would not support the agreement reached in Brussels.

Kammenos, who also serves as Greece's Defence Minister, likened the situation to a "coup".

“We cannot agree to this deal,” he said, citing creditors’ demands for streamlining value-added taxes, broadening the tax base to increase revenue, curbing pension costs and imposing tougher rules on foreclosures.

"In a parliamentary democracy, there are rules and we uphold them" he told reporters after meeting Tsipras.

Kammenos said that his party members will meet Tuesday and decide on how to act.

“We will move forward together, the Greek government and the Greek people united, to claim the right of Greek citizens,” he said suggesting that he did not want to leave the coalition.

But he noted that he will refuse to be part of a new coalition government that includes opposition parties such as Potami and New Democracy, who were willing to give everything up to creditors while the Prime Minister was struggling in Brussels.
