Samaras resigns, leadership vote to follow

New Democracy, Greece's concentrative opposition party, is searching for a new leader after Antonis Samaras resigned on the back of landslide victory of the 'No' vote in the Greek referendum, when voters rejected further austerity cuts.

New Democracy had campaigned for 'Yes' in Sunday's referendum, echoing warnings from European officials that a rejection of EU-IMF reform proposals could lead Greece out of the single currency zone.

Evangelos Meimarakis, former president of the parliament and former minister of defense, currently serves as the party's provisional president till elections are held.

New Democracy MP Makis Voridis, former minister for infrastructure, announced that he is considering running for his party’s leadership. Voridis told private ANT1 TV that anyone can run for party presidency, however there were certain ‘parameters’ he wanted to consider before taking such a decision.

Meanwhile prefect of the Peloponnese Petros Tatoulis has announced that he also intends to run for the party’s leadership.

Nikos Dendias, former minister of public order and citizen protection, could also run for the presidency. Dendias posted a number of tweets today that seemed to be aimed at Samaras.

“The responsibility for the results is not the same for all of us” he wrote and added“Today is not the right moment to discuss what we will do at New Democracy. We will look at that tomorrow.”
