Pro-EU supporters will create a new group shortly to run the "Yes" campaign for a referendum Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced to hold on July 5.
Giorgos Kaminis and Yannis Boutaris, the mayors of Athens and Salonika, have agreed to head the “Yes” campaign during the referendum on the bailout terms put forward by Greece's lenders.
The new group aims to focus the efforts of disparate pro-Europeans who fear a Greek exit from the 28-nation bloc it joined in 1981 would trigger rampant inflation, political unrest, debt defaults and a possible "contagion" within Europe's financial sector.
The campaign is endorsed by 50 individuals from the fields of local administration, academia and art-world. Celebrity endorsements suggests organizers is to run a full throated pro-European campaign.
The initiative aspires to inform people about the implications of an eventual Grexit and call attention to the need for Greece to stay in the euro zone.
