Tourists struck by lightning at Knossos, Crete

Local media reports say people injured included a pregnant woman and were from the same group of Russian tourists.

Around 19 people were injured earlier today by a lightning strike at the archaeological site of Knossos in the island of Crete, during a sudden storm.

According to local media, the injured included a pregnant woman and were from the same group of Russian tourists.

A woman suffered a cardiac arrest and many other people had light injuries or were suffering from shock and taken to hospital with the woman said to be in a serious condition.

The victims were sheltering from the heavy rain under a tree inside the ruins of the prehistoric palace of Knossos, near the port city of Herakleion in northern Crete, when they were struck.

There were no immediate reports of damage to the ancient site, which is one of Greece's main archaeological attractions.
