Greek government denies tax on withdrawals from ATM’s

Greece may impose a small levy on bank ATM withdrawals to give incentive to use credit cards, as part of a package of measures aimed at fighting tax evasion, the finance minister said on Tuesday.“There may be, for example, a small fee on ATM withdrawals. This is under discussion as an incentive to use plastic ... it has not been decided yet,” the minister told reporters. “It could be a very small levy” Yanis Varoufakis was cited by Reuters as saying. He categorically ruled out any tax on bank deposits.

A few hours later the Greek finance ministry states that a banking transaction tax and a levy on ATM withdrawals is “no longer” being discussed in talks with EU/IMF lenders.
