Crash sends car into Ilissos river

A car crashed into a tree in Athens on Tuesday morning, sending the driver to the hospital with multiple injuries.

The driver had been speeding on Ardetos Street. The car then veered off the road and hit marbles steps leading to a chapel on the west side of the Ilissos (Ilissus) river, police said.

The vehicle went airborne and landed on a tree on the river’s west bank. The river has been canalized and is mostly under ground, the car crash occured on the only section of it still visible on the south side of the support walls of the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

Police said the crash is under investigation, but it appears speed was the major factors.
