A new report reveals a significant shift in Greek travel habits, with younger generations increasingly opting for destinations in Asia and Africa over traditional European hotspots.

The trend, highlighted by Revolut's first Global Travel Spending Report, indicates a growing appetite for diverse cultural experiences and value among Greek travelers.

The digital banking platform analyzed spending data from 24 countries and 55 million customers worldwide, showing a clear shift in 2024.

While the United Kingdom remains the top destination for Greeks, accounting for 18% of international spending, interest in faraway and culturally rich locations is surging.

Overall spending by Greek travelers abroad rose by 5% in 2024 compared to the previous year. Notably, travel to Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam surged by more than 40% among 25- to 34-year-olds, who are largely driving this trend. This younger demographic accounted for 37% of all international Greek spending, a sharp contrast to older age groups who continue to favor familiar European and North American destinations.

"Greek tourists are looking beyond the beaten path," said Tara Massoudi, general manager of premium products at Revolut. "Destinations offering authenticity, culture, and value are in demand — and we’re seeing that reflected in the data."

Countries like Morocco and Egypt also saw a 38% rise in travel from Greece, becoming popular choices for budget-conscious adventurers.

The data suggests a widening generational divide, with older Greeks (55 and above) sticking to familiar ground while younger travelers are more willing to explore new continents.

When traveling abroad, Greek tourists prioritize dining, spending 30% of their budget in restaurants, with an average transaction of 19 euros.

Shopping followed closely at 24%, while everyday essentials accounted for 16% of spending.

Revolut customers benefit from features supporting global travel, including earning rewards points, booking accommodations, purchasing activities, using eSIMs in more than 100 countries, and accessing airport lounges, depending on their plan.

"Revolut was founded on the belief that money should never get in the way of exploring the world," Massoudi said. "We’re proud to help shape and support this new era of Greek travel."
