The world’s largest Greek flag was hoisted by a crane over the port of Heraklion on Tuesday to commemorate Oxi Day.
The annual national holiday, celebrated Oct. 28, marks Greece’s entry into World War II.
The 1,440-square-meter flag measures 32 by 45 meters (105 by 148 feet) and is visible from numerous locations across Crete's largest city.
The tradition is an initiative of the local Kalathakis family.
"This is a way to honor those who lost their lives for the country," said Iasmi Kalathaki, speaking on the family's behalf.
Ms. Kalathaki added that the flag serves "to remind everyone that we must not forget their sacrifice and values."
