A 41-year-old accountant has been arrested for the murder of his 39-year-old wife in Kalamata after allegedly stabbing her multiple times while the couple's two daughters, aged 6 and 10, slept in the next room — then placing a knife in the victim's hand in an apparent attempt to claim self-defence.
Neighbors alerted police to screams shortly before 2 a.m. Monday.
Officers arrived to find the suspect covered in blood and the woman dead. Forensic examination found multiple stab wounds on the victim and no defensive wounds on the suspect, contradicting his account.
He reportedly confessed to the killing during interrogation.
Neighbors told investigators there had been no formally reported domestic violence, but said the couple argued frequently over the suspect's jealousy.
Some witnesses said they had previously heard the victim say she was being beaten with a belt.
The two girls were found unharmed in their beds and have been transferred to the Pediatric Clinic of Kalamata Hospital for protective custody and psychological support. A prosecutor will determine their future placement.
The killing is the latest in a series of femicides that has renewed calls in Greece for formal recognition of the term in the penal code — a debate that has intensified as the frequency of such killings has drawn sustained public and parliamentary attention.
