Firefighters across Greece responded to 47 new wildfires in a 24-hour period, with five blazes still active Sunday evening as the country continues to face a high-risk fire season, the Fire Service said.

While 42 of the fires were contained in their early stages, crews were still working to control the remaining blazes.

A new fire that broke out Sunday afternoon in a rural area near Nea Sampsounta in the Preveza region has been brought under partial control.

A force of 25 firefighters, supported by ground vehicles and two aircraft, was deployed to the scene.

The causes of the fires are under investigation by national and local arson units.

Authorities have renewed their appeal for the public to be extremely cautious and to follow all official safety instructions to prevent new fires from starting.
