Who Are the Hells Angels? The FBI's Most Watched Motorcycle Gang Rides Into Greece for Its European Convention

The Hells Angels, founded by World War II veterans in California in 1948 and now one of the world's most recognised — and most surveilled — motorcycle clubs, have brought an estimated 5,000 members and supporters to western Greece for the Euro Run 2026 convention, prompting the deployment of Greek anti-organized crime units and the arrest of seven arriving riders found carrying concealed weapons at the Bulgarian and Polish borders.

The FBI classifies the Hells Angels as one of its "Big Four" outlaw motorcycle gangs, alongside the Outlaws, Bandidos and Pagans. Across eight decades and dozens of countries, European and U.S. law enforcement agencies have repeatedly targeted the club's chapters for involvement in narcotics trafficking, extortion, money laundering and violent crime.

The most lethal chapter of that history was the Nordic Biker Wars of the 1990s, when a decade-long conflict between the Hells Angels and rival Bandidos killed a dozen people across Scandinavia.

The club cultivates a carefully constructed identity — leather cuts, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, a philosophy of personal liberty outside mainstream society — that has generated significant cultural mythology alongside the criminal record.

Its "1%" patch, adopted in defiance of a statement by the American Motorcyclist Association that 99 percent of riders are law-abiding, has become the defining symbol of outlaw motorcycle culture worldwide.

In Greece, the club's presence carries specific historical weight.

The last time Igoumenitsa hosted a major Hells Angels gathering, in 2015, a 41-year-old Greek man was beaten to death by club members outside a local restaurant.

This year's event runs through June 7 at the Drepano camping grounds, with traffic diversions around the peninsula and zero-tolerance orders for public disturbances.

The seven riders arrested at the Promachonas border crossing were found with knives, batons and brass knuckles.

They have been processed by Greek border authorities.
