A newly surfaced video shows the final moments of a 61-year-old hiker who was killed in a bear attack last June, capturing the sound of his desperate attempt to use pepper spray before the animal charged and sent him falling down a ravine.
The footage, aired by Greece's Mega Channel, documents the fatal encounter of Christos Stavrianidis, an experienced hiker from Drama. In the video, a bear is seen approaching Mr. Stavrianidis and his companion.
After the animal moves out of frame, the sound of pepper spray is heard, followed by the bear charging. Mr. Stavrianidis is then seen losing his balance and falling while calling out to his friend.
The attack occurred on June 9 while the two men were hiking near the remote site of a World War II plane wreck.
The companion, who was not seriously injured, immediately called emergency services.
Wildlife experts suggest the bear's behavior was likely defensive.
The incident has renewed calls for caution for hikers in the mountainous region.
