Security footage has emerged showing a 48-year-old man forcing a 45-year-old woman to her knees at gunpoint before fatally shooting her outside her home in the Athens suburb of Nea Smyrni, according to a report by Star television, as police continue investigating the killing that ended with the attacker's suicide.
Investigators say the footage shows the man lying in wait outside the woman's home before she emerged.
As she stepped outside, he approached her, threatened her with a revolver, and forced her to kneel before firing.
The first shot missed; the second was fatal.
Authorities are examining whether the man had been threatening the woman prior to the attack. He had a documented history of harassment, having been arrested in Albania in 2016 for stalking his ex-wife.
Reports indicate the victim feared for her safety and had changed the locks at the home she shared with her minor daughter as a precaution.
Ammunition matching the caliber used in the shooting was found in the suspect's car, and the revolver used in the attack is believed to have been newly acquired, according to authorities.
Investigators are collecting statements from both families and are treating testimony from the victim's daughter as critical to clarifying the nature of her mother's relationship with the suspect.
The victim's mother, visibly shaken, told reporters she had no knowledge of any relationship between her daughter and the suspect.
"I don't know anything. She hadn't told me anything. I just found out what happened to my daughter when my other daughter called me," she said, her voice breaking. "She and her ex-husband had gone their separate ways some time ago."
