U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Bergam has toured the revitalized Elefsina Shipyards alongside top Greek ministers to review the progress of a major American investment aimed at transforming the historic site into a strategic maritime hub.
Mr. Bergam was welcomed by Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos and Panos Xenokostas, CEO of Onex Shipyards, which is leading the turnaround. The project is backed by a €125 million investment from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).
During the visit, Mr. Theodorikakos hailed the "strategic cooperation" with the U.S. and highlighted the Greek government's initiatives to classify shipbuilding as a strategic sector. He also referenced Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's recent pledge to expand Greek-American cooperation in the defense industry.
The visit underscores the deepening strategic ties between Athens and Washington, with the shipyard's revival seen as a key component of regional energy and economic security.
