A new academic chair dedicated to the study of Alexander the Great will be established at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, following the signing of a cooperation agreement Friday in the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The initiative, led by Deputy Interior Minister for Macedonia-Thrace Konstantinos Gioulekas, is a public-private partnership.
Five of Thessaloniki's leading industrial and commercial associations will co-fund the chair, donating €48,000 annually for three years.
Titled "Ancient Greek History: Alexander the Great and His Era," the new chair aims to become a leading international center for research on the period, promote accurate historical knowledge, and educate a new generation of scholars.
Mr. Gioulekas called the founding a "national endeavor" to promote Macedonia's historical and cultural heritage. University Rector Kyriakos Anastasiadis thanked the partners and Mr. Gioulekas, stating that the chair "will gain international recognition, shining a spotlight on Macedonia’s and Greece’s historical heritage."
