A UK court has ordered the extradition of Luke Brownsdon to Greece to serve a 12-year prison sentence for the 2019 death of British tourist Matt Jeffery on the island of Zakynthos, in a case that drew renewed scrutiny after a Sky News documentary questioned aspects of the original investigation.
Westminster Magistrates' Court ruled that Mr. Brownsdon, convicted in absentia by a Greek court in Patras in March 2023 of inflicting fatal bodily harm with serious intent, must be surrendered to Greek authorities.
He has seven days to appeal.
The case returned to public attention after Sky News aired "The Punch," a documentary re-examining the death of Mr. Jeffery, a 35-year-old husband, father and patrolman from Somerset, and suggesting that one person involved in the altercation may have escaped prosecution.
Mr. Jeffery was on a stag weekend when a fight broke out inside the Sizzle nightclub in Laganas on May 24, 2019, between his group and another group from Essex. CCTV and mobile phone footage showed the confrontation continuing outside the club, where Mr. Brownsdon struck Mr. Jeffery, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement. He was airlifted to Athens, where he died five days later.
Two men were arrested shortly afterward but permitted to leave Greece pending trial. In March 2023,
Mr. Brownsdon was sentenced to 12 years and Adam O'Brien to 10 years for participating in the assault; neither attended the trial. Sky News's investigation later raised doubts about Mr. O'Brien's conviction, presenting witness statements and facial comparison analysis suggesting another man may have thrown the first punch. An appellate court subsequently reduced Mr. O'Brien's sentence to a suspended three-year term, while Mr. Brownsdon's conviction stood.
Mr. Brownsdon was arrested by the UK's National Extradition Unit in April 2025 and has remained in custody since.
During proceedings, he argued he lacked an interpreter during police questioning in Greece, received inadequate legal representation, and was unaware of his trial date. He is separately appealing his conviction and sentence in Greece, with that hearing scheduled for November.
He also argued extradition would violate Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, citing expert testimony that Patras prison, where he would serve his sentence, is operating at roughly 139% capacity. The court rejected those arguments and approved extradition.
