A 42-year-old foreign national and a 45-year-old Greek woman were arrested on Wednesday in Agia Paraskevi, accused of involvement in the illegal pet trade. Three more individuals, including a veterinarian, have been identified and are currently wanted.

According to the Hellenic Police, the suspects were illegally breeding and trading companion animals, in violation of animal welfare regulations.

Using a pet supply and service shop in Gerakas as a front, the suspects reportedly carried out illegal sales of companion animals. They had posted over 86 advertisements for pets on a well-known online platform. After reaching agreements with prospective buyers regarding price and location, the arrested individuals allegedly arranged the transport and delivery of the animals.

During searches of a residence and a dog training facility, authorities discovered 27 dogs of various breeds, a sphynx cat, and a hawk, all confined in cages.

The animals were handed over to the relevant authorities to receive proper protection and care. Administrative fines totaling 119,000 euros were imposed on the suspects.

The arrested individuals were brought before the competent public prosecutor.
