Greek anti-narcotics officers have arrested a 43-year-old Turkish national near the port of Igoumenitsa after seizing nearly 110 kilograms of cannabis believed destined for distribution in Athens, according to police.
The arrest followed a targeted operation by the Igoumenitsa Narcotics Squad, which intercepted a vehicle with Greek license plates in the suburb of Nea Selefkeia, a few kilometers from the key western port.
A search uncovered 102 tightly wrapped packages of raw cannabis concealed in the rear seats and trunk, with a total weight of 109.36 kilograms.
Authorities said the suspect had transported the drugs across the mountainous Greek-Albanian border and was en route to the capital.
The man, whose identity has not been disclosed under Greek privacy laws, faces felony charges of drug trafficking.
Prosecutors at the Thesprotia Court of First Instance ordered the seizure of both the narcotics and the vehicle used in the transport.
Investigators are continuing inquiries to identify and locate potential accomplices in Greece who were expected to receive the shipment.
Igoumenitsa, one of Greece’s main gateways to Italy and Western Europe, has long been a strategic transit point for cross-border smuggling networks, prompting heightened surveillance by regional law enforcement.
