The Greek military is preparing to provide a naval escort for the resumption of work this fall on a major underwater power cable linking Greece and Cyprus, a year after harassment by Turkish warships temporarily halted the project, military sources said.
The research vessel will be accompanied by a "discreet escort" of Greek warships, according to sources who spoke to local media.
The Hellenic Navy is maintaining constant surveillance of the region with ships and unmanned aircraft.
"Greece’s Armed Forces are ready to respond to any scenario," one source said.
Officials are preparing for a repeat of an incident last February, when a Turkish frigate used its radio to harass research vessels in international waters, prompting a temporary suspension of the project.
While Greece's response will be "measured" if Turkish vessels maintain a safe distance, Athens has publicly stated that the Great Sea Interconnector is a European project and cannot be obstructed under international law.
