A 49-year-old Turkish national who was arrested over his alleged involvement in gunfire against officers of the National Intelligence Service (EYP) has been read charges and is being held at the General Police Headuarters of Thessaloniki, authorities said in an update on Saturday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday (May 27) afternoon in Thermi, Thessaloniki. Police said he was the one who fired a gun at the car carrying EYP officers while he was driving his own jeep, which he used to escape with two fellow-nationals. He was found after blocks placed in the Rhodopi area and with the help of drones.
According to information released, the Turk was located hiding at a shed in the village of Kato Vyrsini, in Rhodopi. It appears that he was heading to Bulgaria through mountain passes.
The prosecutor of the first-instance court levelled charges of manslaughter by complicity (a crime), and illegal possession and use of weapons (misdemeanors). The two men riding in the getaway car are being sought and have been charged with aiding a manslaughter attempt and accessories after the fact.
All three were expected to be also served arrest warrants issued by the regular investigator of Thessaloniki handling the case. The 49-year-old is scheduled to be led to the courts of Thessaloniki on Monday under an arrest warrant execution, and to testify before the investigator.
Following directions by the Turk, police found his abandoned jeep at a remote farm road, nearly 2 km out of Gerakarou in the Thessaloniki area.
