Alexis Tsipras's New Left party (ELAS) has criticized the government over a new defense agreement between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, including a mutual defense assistance clause, calling it "a serious new blow" to Greek foreign policy.
The party said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's earlier celebration of a Patriot missile battery deployment to Saudi Arabia had been overshadowed by Riyadh signing strategic agreements with Turkey.
ELAS argued the development leaves Greece dangerously exposed, "outside the umbrella of international organizations," in a regional crisis Mr. Tsipras had warned about since 2021.
"Unfortunately, the era when Greece established multilateral cooperation frameworks in the wider region has passed," the party said, accusing Mr. Mitsotakis of abandoning the "active and multidimensional" foreign policy pursued between 2015 and 2019 in favor of a posture limited to being "a willing and reliable ally."
The Mecca Agreement, signed Thursday, unites Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in a defense partnership widely seen as responding to shared concerns over Iran's regional influence.
