Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will formally present his new memoir, Ithaki (Ithaca), at a major public event in central Athens next week, marking his most significant return to the political stage since resigning as Syriza leader last year.
Mr. Tsipras announced the event on social media. The presentation, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Pallas Theater, is expected to draw wide attention as the former premier re-enters the public sphere amid a fractured opposition landscape.
The event will feature a panel of prominent academics and former associates, including former Alternate Finance Minister Giorgos Houliarakis, a key figure in Greece’s bailout negotiations.
He will be joined by history professors Ioanna Laliotou and Antonis Liakos, as well as Eugenia Fotoniata, a coordinator at the Alexis Tsipras Institute.
Ithaki, published by Gutenberg, has already generated intense interest, reportedly selling out its initial print run within hours of its release earlier this week.
The760-page memoir offers a "personal reckoning" of Mr.Tsipras’s turbulent tenure from 2015 to 2019, including the high-stakes negotiations with European creditors and the divisive 2015 referendum.
In the book, Mr. Tsipras delivers blistering critiques of former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and current Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, while also acknowledging his own "strategic miscalculations."
The launch comes at a pivotal moment for Greece's center-left. With both Pasok and Syriza struggling to challenge the ruling New Democracy party, Mr. Tsipras’s reemergence is fueling speculation that he aims to play a central role in unifying the broader progressive movement.
