President Donald Trump has invited Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides to Washington for a Feb. 19 "Peace Council" focused on Gaza, a U.S. official confirmed Monday.
The invitations place Athens and Nicosia at the center of a new American diplomatic push, even as major European Union powers reportedly view the initiative with skepticism.
According to a report by Hellas Journal, the White House is seeking to convene a "Board of Peace" to oversee the second phase of a reconstruction plan for the war-torn enclave.
Mr. Trump has pressed ahead with the invitations despite reported reluctance from key EU member states, though Hungary and Bulgaria have signaled early support.
Mr. Mitsotakis and Mr. Christodoulides are expected to decide in the coming days whether to attend.
The Greek government is currently assessing the proposal. Mr. Mitsotakis has previously expressed support for European participation in an international body dedicated exclusively to Gaza’s stabilization.
The guest list extends beyond the Eastern Mediterranean. Invitations were also dispatched to leaders from Spain, Germany, Italy, France, and Sweden, though it remains unclear how many will accept.
Mr. Trump expressed hope that hesitant allies might reconsider their stance as the summit approaches.
The meeting aims to secure commitments for the physical and political rebuilding of Gaza, a priority that has struggled to gain unified international traction.
