A record-breaking heatwave combined with strong winds and dust from Africa is creating an unprecedented "triple jackpot" of extreme weather in Greece, a senior meteorologist said, with the intense conditions expected to last until Tuesday.
Meteorologist Panagiotis Giannopoulos of the state broadcaster ERT said the combination was something he had never seen in his 25-year career.
On Friday, several locations set all-time temperature records, with Konitsa hitting 43.8 C (110.8 F) and Skala Messinias reaching 45.8 C (114.4 F).
The heat is forecast to continue through the weekend, with temperatures of 43-44 C expected in western Greece on Saturday, while Athens will reach 41 C.
Oppressive overnight conditions are also a major factor, with temperatures in the capital not expected to drop below 31-32 C (88-90 F).
“It is very likely that this July will rank among the five hottest Julys in recent decades for Athens,” Mr. Giannopoulos said. Relief is expected to begin Sunday evening, with the heatwave forecast to end by Tuesday.
