Three Quiet Coves, a 40-Year Taverna and No Ferry Required: Daskaleio Is 50 Minutes From Athens

A coastal settlement 50 minutes from central Athens by car is drawing day-trippers who want the look and feel of the Cyclades without a ferry: Daskaleio, tucked between Lavrio and Porto Rafti in the Keratea region, offers three naturally sheltered coves, whitewashed houses and fishing boats — and little of the crowd pressure that has pushed mainland holiday bookings to 90 percent occupancy this weekend.

The first two bays see the bulk of visitors; the third remains nearly empty. All three are protected from Aegean winds and offer calmer swimming than the perennially packed Kakia Thalassa beach nearby.

The drive takes Lavrio Avenue toward Keratea, where the road opens to panoramic sea views.

For food, the family-run Giorgakis taverna has served fresh seafood and shellfish on the waterfront for over 40 years.

Inland, Stafylomeli specializes in slow-cooked clay pot dishes — lamb, mutton and rooster over thick pasta — for those ready to move off the beach.

As Athens empties for the Holy Spirit long weekend, Daskaleio is one of the few Attica coastal spots that can absorb visitors without losing the quiet that makes it worth the trip.
