Over 50,000 travelers arrived by ferry and more than 100,000 vehicles were recorded on highways leading into Athens, as the mass return of summer holidaymakers created heavy traffic at the city's main entry points.

The return peak follows the major Aug. 15 Assumption Day holiday.

On Sunday alone, approximately 52,000 people arrived at the three main ports of Attica, with 36,000 disembarking in Piraeus.

On the national highways, more than 60,000 vehicles were recorded passing through the Athens-Corinth tolls, while over 42,000 entered the capital from the Athens-Lamia highway to the north.

Traffic police have implemented special measures to manage the congestion and ensure road safety, as the flow of returning vacationers is expected to continue over the coming days.
