The basic line of the Thessaloniki Metro will return to operation on Monday (Dec. 8), according to officials on Friday, following the completion of works that included an extension to the southern suburb of Kalamaria.
A decision on the date was made at a meeting at the Thessaloniki Metro depot including Deputy Infrastructure & Transport Minister Nikos Tachiaos, Elliniko Metro SA CEO Nikos Kouretas, representatives of Thema-Thessaloniki Metro Operation and Maintenance Company, and contractors.
"The return to operation of the basic line three days earlier than the initially scheduled time was possible due to the successful and faster completion of the first great cycle of system and train testing in the now unified network, including the extension to Kalamaria," said a joint statement by the Infrastructure & Transport Ministry and Elliniko Metro.
Despite the fact tests will continue following the operation of the basic line, they said, the operation of the Metro will follow a full schedule during the holiday season in order to serve passengers better and normalize transport in the city more.
