Εight hundred and thirty dancers filled Aristotelous Square on Thessaloniki's central waterfront to perform the world's largest simultaneous zeibekiko, breaking the Guinness World Record previously held by Cyprus and raising awareness for Alzheimer's disease in the process.

The mass performance on Sunday surpassed Cyprus's record of 754 participants. Coordinated by dance instructor Themis Parastatidis, the event drew performers from across Greece and international delegations from 12 countries, including Germany, Turkey, Cyprus, the United States and China.

The crowd executed a strict five-minute routine choreographed to "Mia Thessaloniki" by Greek vocalist Konstantinos Argyros.

A Guinness World Records judge verified the headcount and synchronization on site before presenting the official title to organizers, to the sound of Queen's "We Are the Champions."

The event was organized in partnership with Alzheimer Hellas and the Friends of the Greek Association of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders, drawing on research linking rhythmic physical activity to cognitive health benefits.

"Dance functions as a comprehensive cognitive training tool," Mr. Parastatidis said. "Dancers must memorize complex foot patterns, gauge spatial boundaries and maintain split-second physical coordination. This collective interaction significantly improves mental health and counters cognitive isolation." Mr. Parastatidis has run community dance classes for elderly patients for several years.

The zeibekiko, a deeply personal improvisational dance rooted in Greek musical tradition, is rarely performed in synchronized mass formations — making the record attempt as culturally provocative as it was logistically ambitious.
