SYRIZA is set to elect Rena Dourou as its parliamentary group leader after rival Pavlos Polakis withdrew his bid, as the once-dominant leftist party continues to hemorrhage members.
The parliamentary group now counts just 12 lawmakers, down from 47 in 2023, with only seven expected to vote given pending departures. Group secretary Yiannis Amanatidis confirmed Ms. Dourou is the sole candidate.
In her candidacy letter, Ms. Dourou said she was answering "a call for a new beginning," acknowledging the party has been "wounded, diminished and weakened" by resignations but insisting the decline is reversible.
Mr. Polakis had proposed Ms. Dourou withdraw in favor of a unanimous pick; when she refused, he dropped out, saying in a Facebook post that the "clean solution" the party needed clearly did not exist and questioning whether recent defections were coordinated.
Departures have accelerated in recent days: lawmakers Yiannis Ragousis, Miltos Zambaras, Olga Gerovasili and Dionysis Kalamatianos all left the group, while Vassilis Kokkalis resigned his seat outright.
Ms. Gerovasili's exit also cost her the post of Parliament's deputy speaker.
SYRIZA's youth wing leadership resigned this week, stating the party "no longer aspires to play its historic role," though it pledged to keep fighting to unseat the governing right-wing coalition.
