Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has confirmed his definitive break with the Syriza party, stating "my relationship with Syriza… has ended," and has laid out the ideological foundation for a new political movement in his first interview since resigning from Parliament.
Speaking to the newspaper Efimerida ton Syntakton, Mr. Tsipras described his next step as a grassroots movement aimed at overcoming "today’s toxic quagmire."
"Only the action of the many can become the engine of progress… I want to dedicate my energy to this."
He called for a "great shock of integrity, justice, and democracy" and a "new patriotism" focused on taxing great wealth, combating corruption, and restoring the rule of law.
He stressed that his new effort would start "from below," with a clean break from past political practices.
"With an old passport, no one will enter the new era," he stated.
While confirming his split from the party he led for 15 years, Mr. Tsipras insisted he would not actively recruit its members.
The interview, conducted by journalists Tassos Pappas and Nikos Papadimitriou, is the clearest signal yet of Mr. Tsipras's plans for a political comeback, with a new party expected to launch in early 2026.
