A low-pressure system moving in from the central Mediterranean is set to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, and mountain snow to Greece just in time for the peak holiday, with the severest weather targeting Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Klearchos Marousakis, a meteorologist with Open TV, warned that the country faces two distinct waves of bad weather starting Tuesday night.

The first front is expected to batter western Greece through Wednesday afternoon, followed by a second, more widespread system lasting into Thursday.

"Christmas Day will begin with severe weather in many areas," Mr. Marousakis said, noting that conditions will hit western, central, and northern regions hardest before gradually improving from west to east by late afternoon.

Strong winds are forecast for the Aegean and Ionian seas, though authorities do not currently anticipate general ferry bans.

By early Friday, Dec. 26, conditions are expected to normalize across most of the country.

Looking ahead to New Year’s, Mr. Marousakis indicated that models point toward a sharp turn to wintry conditions, with the potential for snow even in low-lying areas, though he cautioned that the long-range outlook remains fluid.
