The spirit of Christmas is one of the deepest spiritual experiences of Orthodoxy and of human civilization, says associate professor at the School of Theology of the National and Capodistrian University of Athens and Archimandrite Aristarchos Grekas, clergyman of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens, to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA).

As Archimandrite Aristarchos notes, "The spirit of Christmas is one of the deepest spiritual experiences of Orthodoxy and of human civilization. It is experienced through traditions, worship, and the holiday spirit that emanates from the fact of the birth of Christ, from the incarnation of God who arrives in the world with humility, love, and service."

"During the birth of Christ, the angelic hymn of 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!' is heard. This phrase is linked to the message of Christmas, as God's glory is inextricably linked to human life and manifests through peace on earth. When man turns to God with gratitude and humility, that is where true peace thrives, as inner peace, reconciliation, and understanding," he said.

The spirit of Christmas "inspires modern humans to overcome selfishness, indifference, and isolation," the archimandrite adds. "Bethlehem's manger becomes a reference point for the value of simplicity, love, and service to fellow human beings. It encourages us to stand by those experiencing trials, to show understanding, to offer support and hope, especially at a time of insecurity and social challenges," Father Aristarchos points out. In addition, the spirit of Christmas throws light on the aspect of personal growth, he adds, "inviting every human being to become an agent of peace in their place of living and working, transforming speech into action and faith into a life stance through respect, justice, and understanding in action."

Archimandrite Aristarchos concludes, "Christmas is an active invitation to renew life and mindset. It offers the opportunity of redefinition, so that humans may cultivate their inner peace and convey it to the world around them. As we allow Christ to be born in our hearts, that is how much the joyful angelic praise 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!' becomes a daily act and a living experience."
