Disability policy remais a top government priority since 2019, according to Greek Minister of State Akis Skertsos, pointing to the creation of a National Coordination Mechanism for People with Disabilities and 132 related policies now underway through 2030.

Speaking at a disability-focused event organized by New Democracy's Committee for People with Disabilities alongside the party's Thessaloniki leadership, Mr. Skertsos said the coordination mechanism was designed to unify previously fragmented public policy on employment, education, accessibility, culture and sports for the disability community, an approach he said did not exist before 2019.

He highlighted the Personal Assistant program for people with disabilities, which began as a pilot and has since become a permanent national policy with dedicated funding.

He said additional announcements on disability policy are expected during Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's address at the Thessaloniki International Fair on Saturday.

New Democracy Political Committee Secretary Konstantinos Kyranakis praised Mr. Skertsos's role in embedding equal access principles across government policy, from legislation to public transportation procurement.

He recalled parents of children with disabilities voicing fears about their children's future care, saying the Personal Assistant program directly addressed that concern.

Zisis Ioakeimovits, head of New Democracy's Thessaloniki prefecture committee, said disability policy has shifted from a focus on benefits and fragmented support toward empowerment and equal participation, crediting Mr. Skertsos with advancing measurable, cross-government policies rather than general management of the issue.
