Greek police have arrested six people, ranging in age from 27 to 49, in connection with a failed bombing attempt in Lefkada, with investigators saying the attack was orchestrated by two men already serving time behind bars.

Officers from the Extortion Crimes Unit carried out coordinated raids across Piraeus, Acharnes, Nikaia, Perama and Aegina, arresting all six suspects over two days, August 25-26. Investigators say a 31-year-old Greek man and a 47-year-old Albanian national, both inmates at Malandrino Prison, ordered the attack.
The six suspects had been wanted under arrest warrants issued by the Lefkada Court investigating judge for forming a criminal organization and violating weapons and explosives laws.
The plot centered on an incident January 23, 2026, in the Agiofylli area of Vasiliki, Lefkada, where the group allegedly planted and attempted to detonate an improvised explosive device at a residence.
The device failed to explode, and the attack never materialized.
Two of the suspects have extensive criminal records.
The 49-year-old's history spans three decades, including convictions for drug trafficking, theft, weapons offenses and migrant smuggling, and a five-year prison sentence issued in 2019 for drug-related violations.
He was previously linked to a 2013 incident in which prison officials suspected him of attempting to smuggle heroin, later confirmed when he passed four packets of the drug at a hospital. As recently as January 2026, he was implicated in a store break-in.
The 27-year-old suspect was previously arrested in 2016 for an armed home invasion in Salamina, in which he and accomplices allegedly threatened and assaulted the homeowner before stealing property and his car.
The 36-year-old suspect has a lengthy record involving robbery, weapons, burglary and domestic violence charges, including two armed robberies in early 2025 — one at a kiosk in Keratsini, another involving a stolen handbag — along with multiple domestic violence cases.
No prior criminal records were found for the remaining three suspects.
All six have been referred to judicial authorities, with the investigation continuing to determine the full scope of the network's roles and motives.
