The sister of a 36-year-old woman who was killed by her husband in the city of Volos has alleged the victim was subjected to years of brutal domestic and sexual abuse, which she never reported out of fear for her children's lives.
In an interview with Alpha TV, the victim’s sister claimed the 40-year-old suspect beat his wife in front of their children and used rape and threats to prevent her from leaving him.
"I told her to leave him, but she was afraid," the sister said.
Her account of long-term abuse contrasts with initial police statements that there were no prior domestic violence reports on file for the couple.
The 40-year-old husband, who killed his wife in front of three of their children on Friday, has been charged with intentional homicide in the context of domestic violence.
He is scheduled to appear before an investigating judge on Tuesday.
The case has reignited a national conversation in Greece about intimate partner violence.
