A severe heatwave is set to intensify across Greece starting Tuesday and will persist until at least Friday, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 43 degrees Celsius (109 F) in some regions, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service said in an urgent bulletin.
Maximum temperatures on the mainland are forecast to range between 39 and 41 C (102-106 F), with the hottest conditions expected in Central Macedonia and Thessaly.
The capital, Athens, and the northern city of Thessaloniki are expected to see highs of 39 to 40 C.
Temperatures on the Greek islands will be slightly lower but still elevated, with highs of 37 to 39 C (99-102 F) in the Ionian, eastern Aegean, and Dodecanese islands.
The extreme heat is expected to continue through Wednesday.
Authorities have advised the public to take precautions against heat-related health risks, especially during the hottest parts of the day, and to stay hydrated. Emergency services remain on alert.
