U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will tour Iceland, Greece and Portugal from Oct. 5 to 8, 2026, with his stop in Athens marking the first time a sitting secretary of state has personally led the American delegation at the U.S.-Greece Strategic Dialogue since the forum's inception.
In Reykjavik, Mr. Rubio will meet Icelandic officials focused on economic and security cooperation.
In Athens, he will lead the U.S. delegation at the sixth round of the Strategic Dialogue, aiming to deepen bilateral cooperation on key American priorities including defense ties, regional security and energy.
His visit follows months of high-level contact with Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and comes amid growing U.S. engagement in the region, including Chevron-led energy exploration south of Crete and potential American backing for the Great Sea Interconnector linking Greece, Cyprus and Israel.
Mr. Rubio's trip concludes in Lisbon, where he will meet Portuguese officials to advance defense, economic and technology cooperation.
The visit underscores Washington's elevated strategic focus on the Eastern Mediterranean, where Greece has increasingly positioned itself as a key U.S. partner amid broader regional rivalry with China.
