Riot police have been deployed by ferry to the remote Greek island of Gavdos this week after demolition crews sent to tear down makeshift beach encampments were confronted by activists opposing the clearance operation at one of Europe's most isolated coastal outposts.
The Decentralized Administration of Crete issued demolition orders targeting temporary wooden and natural-material huts along the beaches of Lavrakas and Agios Ioannis.
When state crews arrived to begin work, members of the Gavdos Sea Front Collective staged immediate protests, forcing authorities to send in riot police to secure the area and allow demolitions to proceed.
The collective argues the occupants of the beach structures are environmental stewards rather than illegal squatters, claiming they actively protect Gavdos's sensitive coastal ecosystem and that heavy-handed removal operations will cause more ecological and social harm than the temporary huts themselves.
The standoff reflects a broader tension playing out across Greek islands between state enforcement of coastal regulations and communities that have developed around informal long-term beach camping. Gavdos, located south of Crete and the southernmost point of Europe, has long attracted free-spirited travelers drawn by its extreme isolation, unspoiled coastline and permissive camping culture — a reputation now colliding with stricter regulatory enforcement.
Authorities have not commented publicly on the activists' environmental arguments. Demolitions are continuing under police protection.
