Rescue teams have reached eight climbers trapped near the summit of Mount Taygetos, stabilizing four members of the group who were injured after falling into a ravine on southern Greece’s highest mountain range.
A major operation involving 41 firefighters and elite mountain rescue units is currently underway to transport the group to safety.
According to the Fire Service, emergency crews made contact with the climbers Sunday afternoon near the Prophet Elias peak, at an altitude exceeding 2,000 meters (6,560 feet).
The four injured climbers are receiving first aid on-site and are being carried by stretcher toward a mountain refuge.
Authorities were alerted around 1 p.m. when the group’s leader contacted emergency services, reporting that members of the party had fallen and required evacuation.
The climbers successfully transmitted their precise coordinates, allowing rescuers to locate them quickly in the steep terrain.
The rescue force includes specialized EMAK units from the 1st and 6th divisions, the disaster response unit EMODE, and the IKAROS drone team, which provided aerial surveillance to guide ground crews.
Mount Taygetos, located on the Peloponnese peninsula, is a popular destination for winter mountaineering but is known for its treacherous conditions and sudden weather changes. The operation remains in progress as of Sunday evening.
