Greece is on extreme wildfire alert for Wednesday as a dangerous cocktail of scorching 43-degree Celsius (109-degree Fahrenheit) temperatures and fierce downslope winds threatens to create atmospheric conditions mirroring the country's deadliest fire disaster.

Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas placed the entire state emergency apparatus on maximum readiness, issuing a stark warning to the public.

Mr. Tournas emphasized that dry westerly and northwesterly winds will sweep into eastern regions as powerful downslope gales, directly mimicking the extreme weather pattern that fueled the devastating 2018 Mati fire.

"Any fire tomorrow is prohibitive because conditions will make it extremely difficult to tackle any incident in its initial stages," Mr. Tournas said. "We must all work together to protect human life, property, and our forest wealth."

The Civil Protection mechanism declared a Category 5 "State of Alarm" for the greater Athens region of Attica, alongside Boeotia, Phthiotis, Argolis, and Corinthia.

Ten other major areas, including Thessaly, Thessaloniki, and the island of Rhodes, are operating under a Category 4 severe risk warning.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) also issued an emergency heatwave bulletin. Forecasters project peak temperatures between 41 C and 43 C across the eastern mainland, particularly in Thessaly and the eastern Peloponnese.

Attica is expected to endure oppressive highs of 41 C.

Beyond the soaring heat and localized African dust concentrations, meteorologists warn that afternoon winds will intensify significantly, reaching up to 7 on the Beaufort scale in the northeastern Aegean Sea.

Authorities have cautionedcitizens to strictly follow emergency guidelines and absolutely avoid any outdoor work or activities that could generate a stray spark.
