Greek customs officials have made their largest-ever seizure of the stimulant drug khat at Athens International Airport, confiscating 500 kilograms with an estimated street value of 1.5 million euros, authorities have announced.
The illegal shipment was discovered during a random inspection of cargo transiting from Israel to the United States.
The dried khat leaves were found hidden inside four consignments that had been falsely labeled as curtains, sheets, and fabrics.
Khat is an addictive, psychoactive plant grown in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
The seizure is the largest of its kind at the Athens airport, surpassing the previous record of 458 kilograms confiscated in 2014.
