The price of a souvlaki pita gyro has now surpassed 6 euros in some parts of Greece, a new high for the country's most popular street food that highlights the ongoing pressure of inflation on both consumers and businesses.
According to a recent survey by the local news outlet Creta24, the price for a single wrapped gyro in the city of Heraklion, Crete, now reaches as high as 6.50 euros, with only a handful of shops still offering it for under 5 euros.
In the wider Athens region of Attica, prices for a wrapped gyro range from 3.70 to 5.20 euros, while a full portion can cost up to 13.50 euros.
For a family of four, a simple meal of two gyros each could now cost between 30 and 40 euros.
Industry insiders have warned that rising ingredient and operational costs may lead to further price hikes.
