An investigation is underway at a public hospital in northwestern Greece after a 28-year-old pregnant woman died following a suspected severe allergic reaction to antibiotics.
The woman, who was in her second month of pregnancy, was admitted to the hospital in Arta on Sunday with severe abdominal pain.
Her condition suddenly deteriorated after she was administered antibiotics, and she died shortly afterward, according to local media reports.
Michalis Giannakos, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Workers, told MEGA Channel that the woman suffered multiple organ failure and cardiac arrest.
"She was given antibiotics, went into allergic shock, and was moved to the surgical recovery unit because there was no available ICU bed," Mr. Giannakos said.
He noted that doctors in hospital settings typically rely on patients to report any known allergies.
The hospital has ordered a full investigation into the circumstances of her death.
