Greece’s ruling New Democracy party has seen a resurgence in support following a recent government reshuffle and policy initiatives targeting low-income groups, while Zoe Konstantopoulou’s left-wing Course of Freedom party has experienced a decline in popularity, according to a new opinion poll published Sunday.
The poll, conducted by Marc for the newspaper Proto Thema, indicates that New Democracy has gained 1.7 percentage points in voting intention, now polling at 30.6%, with a projected range between 28% and 33.2%.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also saw an increase in his personal approval ratings, with 32.3% of respondents now considering him the most suitable for the premiership, a 2.1-point rise, giving him a 20-point lead over Ms. Konstantopoulou.
These results coincide with the release of official findings on the deadly Tempi train disaster and follow a recent cabinet reshuffle aimed at revitalizing the government’s image.
Analysts at Marc suggest that the shift in voter sentiment reflects a diminishing public focus on the Tempi tragedy, coupled with the introduction of housing and pension support measures and a perception of government renewal.
The Pasok party remains in third place, though its support continues to decline, according to the survey.
Ms. Konstantopoulou’s Course of Freedom, which had previously surged in polls due to her vocal criticism of the government’s handling of the Tempi train crash, appears to be losing momentum as public attention shifts to broader political and economic concerns.
