Two Polish tourists have been arrested after allegedly assaulting a guard and attemping to steal an artifact from the Delphi archaeological site, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. when two men, aged 42 and 31, entered the site illegally through a cemetery entrance, bypassing the ticket booths.
Athanasia Psálti, head of the Fokida Antiquities Authority, reported that the men refused a security check.
A 50-year-old female guard briefly saw a "large ancient stone-like object" in the younger man's bag, according to Ms. Psálti.
When confronted, the 42-year-old man allegedly pushed the guard to the ground before both men fled in a white rental car.
Police from several units were mobilized and apprehended the suspects a short time later near Livadi Parnassos.
The missing ancient stone was not found in their possession, leading authorities to believe the men discarded or hid it during the pursuit.
The two suspects remain in custody in Amfissa and face charges of aggravated theft, assault on an employee, and violating laws protecting cultural heritage.
