Greek Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michailidou, on Monday called for a fundamental shift in how governments approach youth policy, urging leaders to ensure young people are active participants in shaping their own future.
"The lesson of these 30 years is clear: progress happens when young people fully participate in shaping it," Ms. Michailidou said at a United Nations event marking the 30th anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth.
"Our responsibility is to ensure they have the tools, opportunities, and space to lead in an aging world." She highlighted Greece's own efforts to engage its younger generation, including modernizing vocational training and strengthening its links to the labor market, which she said has helped cut the country's youth unemployment rate nearly in half since 2020.
During her visit to the U.N. General Assembly, Ms. Michailidou also held a series of bilateral meetings with her counterparts from countries including Germany, Bulgaria, and Colombia to discuss family and demographic policies.
