Greek police are searching for a homeless man known locally as "Markos" as a person of interest in the killing of a 38-year-old British woman found dead in a suitcase in Athens's Kypseli district, according to police sources cited by the Daily Mail.
The victim, identified as Jane-Elizabeth Ross of Edinburgh, was reported missing July 15 and found dead three days later. T
he man frequented the abandoned building where her body was discovered but vanished after the site was cordoned off as a crime scene. Described as around 40 years old, heavily tattooed, with black hair and a stocky build, he has a reputation among Kypseli residents for aggressive behavior, particularly toward women, and was previously accused of threatening a Bulgarian tourist with a knife in the same area — an incident police say was never formally reported.
"We have a piece of information concerning a homeless man. We want to locate a specific individual and question him, but we are also looking into other people as part of the investigation," a police source said.
Investigators are also probing inconsistencies in Ms. Ross's account to friends before her death. She reportedly told Greek friends in Keratsini she was going to stay with American acquaintances in Kypseli, but police have been unable to locate these individuals and are exploring whether they existed at all.
Her phone remained active in Athens after her presumed death, sending messages to friends and family suggesting she needed time alone, before going silent around the time her body was formally identified.
The official cause of death remains undetermined; initial forensic examination found no visible wounds, and police have ruled out strangulation and head trauma.
