Greek police made a grim discovery on Sunday, locating a late-term fetus concealed inside a suitcase while responding to a routine landlord-tenant dispute in central Athens.
Officers from the DIAS motorcycle unit were dispatched to a short-term rental apartment in the densely populated Kypseli neighborhood at approximately 4 p.m.
The property owner had contacted authorities to report tenants who were allegedly refusing to pay rent and suspected of using illegal narcotics on the premises.
Upon entering the residence, police encountered four occupants: an older couple, their adult daughter, and her partner.
Officers immediately detained the older couple after discovering an undisclosed amount of cannabis in their possession during an initial search.
However, the routine drug bust took a macabre turn as authorities continued to sweep the apartment.
While inspecting luggage belonging to the tenants, officers opened a suitcase and discovered the remains of a fetus, estimated by preliminary assessments to be between seven and eight months gestation.
The occupants have been taken into police custody for further questioning. Authorities have cordoned off the Kypseli apartment, and a medical examiner will conduct a full autopsy to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
